Mohamed Ali. The Greatest.

""I'm so fast that last night I turned off the light switch in my hotel room and was in bed before the room was dark."

He was a black American boxer who became the most famous sportsman on the planet and one of the most important people ever to have lived.

1. Heavyweight Gold medallist at the 1960 Olympics. Came home to a racist and divided US. Threw his gold medal in the river after being refused entry into a Whites Only restaurant in his home town of Louisville.
2. Became World Champion in 1964 but was stripped of his belt in 1967 after refusing to serve America in the Vietnam War.
3. Regained crown in 1974 and then again in 1978.

Became a great icon for his fast feet ( the Ali Shuffle ) and hands - and even faster mouth. He was stylish and good looking and articulate and for the first time ever a Black man was the most famous person on the planet. At a time when Civil rights was still a massive issue.
His stance on Vietnam made him a hate figure in traditional America but a great Icon everywhere else. Like Nelson Mandela many years later
Suffered from Parkinsons Disease for the last 25 years of his life.
