JUMP is how we introduce students to Shutter Speed.

We practise with different speeds in Shutter Priority Mode - seeing how slower speeds cause camera shake and motion blur and how the action is frozen when faster speeds are set. Most of these images are taken between 1/500sec and 1/2000thsec depending on the lighting conditions. We also talk about Sport mode - because their cameras are likely to have this option. We explain how Sport Mode gives a fast speed but also automatically selects Servo AF and continuous Motor Drive - both of which are likely to be helpful when shooting fast moving subjects.

Control of Shutter, Aperture and ISO are the 3 elements on which we base our teaching. Learn to control them and you have complete control of your camera. And Shutter speed is the easiest and most enjoyable way into all this. We also teach panning at the other end of the shutter speed spectrum and long exposure techniques using tripods in our Painting with Light and Landscape sessions.

In Year 6 the pace is gentle and not very technical but by the time we are teaching GCSE and A-level students we really want them to be able to control their cameras and use their understanding of simple techniques to achieve creative freedom.

It starts simply though - with a fast shutter and happy students getting airborne.
